Staebell was born October 30, 1923 in Lancaster, NY, the son of the late
Frank J. and Josephine Staebell. He attended St. Mary’s High School,
graduating in the Class of 1941. A year later, he was drafted into the U.S.
Army and attended field artillery school in Fort Sill, Oklahoma.
After further training in the U.S., he was stationed in
Europe with the U.S. First Army for a year and a half. During this time, he
was engaged in several campaigns from the Rhineland to Berlin. With the rank
of Master Sergeant, he was discharged from the army in March 1946.
Following his years in the army, he attended Canisius
College for three years before entering the Novitiate of the Oblates of Mary
Immaculate in Ipswich, Massachusetts. He then attended Catholic University
in Washington, D. C. While in his second year of Theology, he transferred to
Christ the King Seminary in Allegany, NY and was ordained by the late Most
Rev. Joseph A. Burke at St. Joseph’s Cathedral March 16, 1957.
Fr. Staebell’s priestly assignments include Missionary
Apostolate at Immaculate Conception Church, East Bethany; St. Aloysius
Church, Cheektowaga; St. Mary of the Cataract, Niagara Falls; Our Lady of
Perpetual Help and Blessed Trinity Churches, Buffalo; and St. James Parish,
Depew.
In April 1973 he was assigned his first pastorate at St.
Monica’s Church in Buffalo. In 1975 he became pastor of St. Anthony’s Church
in Farnham, the parish in which he served for twenty-two years. He retired
in July 1997 and moved to his current residence in Silver Creek. While in
retirement, Fr. Staebell has continued to help with duties on the weekends
by celebrating Mass at St. Anthony's in Farnham, Most Precious Blood in
Angola, as well as in several other parishes in the Diocese of Buffalo.
